Mangrove snapper fishing around Tampa Bay

Mangrove snapper tuck into Tampa Bay pier pilings, rocks and mangrove cover, darting out to intercept shrimp and small fish. Summer is the main shore-fishing window, when a discreet bait presentation close to cover matters more than a long cast.

winter
Fish small shrimp slowly beside sheltered structure on warmer days, with fewer bites expected in cold water.
spring
As water warms, drift small whitebait close to pilings and rocky edges without using oversized tackle.
summer
Concentrate on pier structure at dawn or dusk, dropping small live baits just outside snagging cover.
fall
Keep fishing structure with shrimp while water remains warm, then reduce bait size and drift speed as it cools.

How to catch

General guidance; adapt tackle to conditions and follow current rules.

Hook
Size 1-1/0 non-stainless inline circle hook
Leader
15-25 lb fluorocarbon
Weight
1/4-1 oz sliding egg sinker
Rig
Knocker rig: slide an egg sinker directly above the hook and use the lightest weight that places a small bait beside structure.
Technique
Lower bait just upstream of cover and let it settle naturally with minimal slack. When the line tightens, reel smoothly and apply side pressure before the fish reaches a piling.
Best tide
Moderate incoming or outgoing current; ease toward the tide turn if the rig sweeps into cover
Time of day
Dawn or dusk; night only where access hours allow
  1. Trim bait to hide the hook shank while leaving its point exposed.
  2. Retie after any scrape against concrete or oysters.
  3. Have a landing net ready before fishing close to a pier support.
